June Newsletter Recap:

Caregiver Support, Community Giving, and Glow for a Cure

June was a busy month at Alzheimer's of Central Alabama, with weekly updates focused on caregiver encouragement, brain health, Alzheimer's research, and ways to support local families.

From practical care tips to community events, here are a few highlights from the month.

Glow for a Cure Brought the Community Together

Throughout June, ACA's newsletters spotlighted Glow for a Cure, hosted by ACA's Junior Board on Friday, June 26, 2026, at Highland Park Golf Course.

Glow for a Cure combined golf, dinner, music, a silent auction – in-person and online, and community support to benefit the Lindy Harrell Predoctoral Scholars Program in Alzheimer's research at UAB. Supporters had teams, sponsored holes, purchased spectator tickets, and participated in the silent auction. Featured auction items included a week at a townhouse in 30A, Sony noise-canceling headphones, and Tito's gift buckets.

Community Support for ACA Families

Supporters had a sweet way to give back in June through Cookie Fix at Brock's Gap. From June 8-14, anyone who bought a Blondie and mentioned ACA helped support Alzheimer's of Central Alabama, with 10% of sales benefiting our work.

ACA also invited the community to sponsor 4th of July Care Baskets for families caring for a loved one living with Alzheimer's disease. Each $50 donation helps provide a basket with food, snacks, and household goods, hand delivered by ACA volunteers.

Caregiver Resources and Practical Support

Caregiver support remained a steady focus throughout June. ACA continued to highlight Coffee Talk with Miller & Vance, our weekly virtual support group held Tuesdays from 11 a.m. to noon CT, along with updated support group options.

June also brought practical reminders for caregivers, including making time for small moments of self-care, creating a "success list" instead of a long to-do list, and watching for signs of dehydration in loved ones living with dementia. These small steps can make daily care feel a little more manageable while helping protect both the caregiver and the person receiving care.

Glow for the cure Golf tournament for Alzheimer'sGlow for a Cure

Glow for a Cure, ACA's night golf tournament hosted by the Junior Board on Friday, was on June 26, 2026, at Highland Park Golf Course in Birmingham, and it was our best turnout yet with 21 teams with 84 players.

The event supports the Lindy Harrell Predoctoral Scholars Program in Alzheimer's research at UAB. Alex Kahn, a dual MD/PhD student at UAB received the 2026 award and played in the tournament!

Research, Brain Health, and Education

Research and brain health topics included earlier detection through new brain imaging research, a Stanford podcast on Alzheimer's diagnosis and hope, the connection between quitting smoking and brain health, and upcoming educational programs from UAB and the Alzheimer's Foundation of America.

Together, these updates pointed to a hopeful message: research continues to move forward, and families can stay informed while taking practical steps to support health and well-being.
