Celebrating our 30th anniversary in 2021, Alzheimer’s of Central Alabama is a local organization helping local families. ACA serves 21 counties across central Alabama. 100% of the money we raise stays in Alabama.
Each year over 400 people with dementia and their families benefit from services such as scholarships to attend adult day care centers or to receive continence products, Project Lifesaver bracelets to diminish the risk of wandering, education through support groups, newsletter, website, community awareness/education programs, and our telephone helpline.
During the COVID pandemic the day care centers were closed. With the funding normally allocated to this program we have added more clients to our continence program and began offering delivery of nutritional supplements. To combat boredom, we have distributed Joy For All robotic pets – cats and dogs – the response to which has surpassed our expectations. We also mail activity packets with pictures to color, jokes, puzzles, and games.
Research: ACA has funded annual research grants since 2004 and in 2018 established the Alzheimer’s of Central Alabama Pre-Doctoral Scholars Program Support Fund for Alzheimer’s Disease Research which is currently supporting two scholars.
We provide services in Bibb, Blount, Calhoun, Cleburne, Chilton, Clay, Coosa, Etowah, Fayette, Greene, Hale, Jefferson, Lamar, Pickens, Randolph, Shelby, St. Clair, Talladega, Tallapoosa, Tuscaloosa, and Walker counties.
